EHH was appointed to deliver the complete Mechanical and Electrical services package for the extension and refurbishment of the Resuscitation (Resus) Area within the Emergency Department at Russell’s Hall Hospital. The project forms part of a major investment to enhance emergency care facilities while maintaining full hospital operations throughout the construction period.
Scope of Works
Following the successful completion of enabling works, including the creation of temporary ambulance facilities, treatment rooms and a temporary Resus area, the main construction phase commenced to deliver a modernised emergency care environment for patients and clinical staff.
Working within a live acute hospital environment presented significant logistical and operational challenges. Critical healthcare services needed to remain fully operational while extensive infrastructure upgrades and new installations were undertaken.
The project required careful planning and coordination to ensure:
- Continuous operation of emergency and clinical services
- Integration of new systems with existing live infrastructure
- Minimal disruption to patients, staff and hospital operations
- Safe management of complex M&E diversions and installations
Electrical Services
- New 500kVA transformer and RMU installation
- High voltage cable diversions
- Two new 550kVA standby generators
- HV/LV earthing and lightning protection systems
- Main switch panels and LV distribution systems
- Internal lighting and power installations
- IPS and UPS systems
- Medical earthing and medical trunking systems
- Nurse call systems
- Fire alarm and security systems
- Structured voice and data cabling
Mechanical Services
- Roof-mounted AHUs and ventilation systems
- Fire and smoke damper systems
- Incoming mains water services
- MCWS, BCWS and HWS installations
- Steam pipework systems
- Domestic hot water generation plant
- Low temperature hot water generation and distribution
- Medical gas installations
- Pneumatic tube systems
- DX/VRV air conditioning systems
- Building Management System (BMS) controls
Project Outcome
The development will provide a modernised Resuscitation Area and Bereavement Suite, supported by robust and resilient mechanical and electrical infrastructure designed specifically for critical healthcare environments.
By carefully coordinating works within a live hospital setting, EHH is helping to deliver enhanced emergency care facilities that will improve patient experience, support clinical teams and strengthen healthcare provision for the local community.
